DAY 5

JONAS KULLHAMMAR QUARTET @ The Cultch
Arrived with set underway, and forced to wait outside doors upstairs until a song break. It soon became apparent that it would never come. And it also soon became apparent the music of this group was not of interest to me. I was – foolishly as it turns out – expecting more dynamic, crazily thrilling, out shit from these young Swedes, and what I got was pretty straight-up. Not bad, really, but not what I was gunning for either. There were moments of pleasure listening to Kullhammer’s firm grasp of his sax’s abilities, which made me long for some flat-out improv from the (ahem) 26-year-old whiz. Oh, and he was also very funny with his between-song banter, some of it perhaps well-practised, but it confirmed for me that the global community isn’t quite as integrated as we sometimes think, and there’s still room for getting lost in translation. Yay! (Torbjorn Gulz, piano/sax; Torbjorn Zetterberg, bass; Jonas Holgersson, drums)

BIK BENT BRAAM @ The Cultch
They went gently into the set, tip-toeing a few instruments at a time, saving the bombast of the 13-piece Euro big band for later. Unfortunately, I never got to later as I had an unavoidable errand that caused me to leave during the second piece. Sure would’ve liked to stay and watch more of Dutch bassist Wilbert de Joode’s magnificent big paws work those strings. Have you seen the size of that man’s hands? Terrific players all, many of whom we’ve seen in all kinds of situations in recent years – thank you Coastal. (Michiel Braam, piano; Joop vanErven, drums; Frans Vermeeerssen, t. sax; Frank Gratkowski, a. sax/clar., Jan Willem van der Ham, a. sax; Bart van der Putten, a. sax/clar., Peter Haex, Patrick Votrian, tubas; Eric Boeren, cornet; Angelo Verploegen, trump., Wolter Wierbos, Hans Sparla, trombones)

JAM SESSION @ O’DOUL’S
Caught a tune or two of Mike Allen’s lovely Quartet, but as soon as the break after as they were setting up for the Jam Session, I felt the gotta-get-up-at-7 crash take hold and that was it. I think many were feeling something similar, as there was a distinctly mellow mood in the place at the time – mid-fest need-rest syndrome methinks.
