I'll never forget the first time I heard Redman live, with Ornette Coleman at the original Cellar in the very early seventies. I was in awe of Ornette but was absolutely riveted by Redman's playing those nights.

I heard him there too Brian. Dewey and the rest of the band played some amazing and unforgettable music. One of the experiences you never get over.

That's awful. He was a singular voice.

Dewey lives !
listen to his solo on the ANC anthem on the second LMO record...... one of the great ones !!!! Red and Black (Dewey and Ed Blackwell) !!!!!!!! funny anicdote: I observed Dewey sitting at the bar at the BIM house in Amsterdam after his gig, it was late and people were leaving, Dewey was deep in thought (or something) at the bar. As people left they shouted DEWEY DEEWWEEEY ... snapping dewey out of his funk, he was surprised and confused why everyone was calling him. this went on 'til the end of the night. Dewey means bye in Dutch. Thank you Dewey. |
