It's been a incredible week for creative music in Vancouver with the Anthony Braxton 12+1tet concert, the eight-hour Sonic Genome performance and 3 evenings of the Time Flies Festival of Improvised Music. And central to all these events were my guests in the studio: brass instrumentalist Taylor Ho Bynum and guitarist Mary Halvorson. More talk than tunes in this show but we covered a lot of ground from Le Petomane to Dostoevsky's prison number.

I wouldn't necessarily have thought so two months ago but having been brought up to date, I'm now convinced that the long-term influence of Anthony Braxton in the future of creative music is and will continue to be profound. As a composer, theorist, instrumental practitioner and a source of fearless innovation, he's left his mark on a whole community of players. My two guests are exemplary members of that community who have already produced an exciting body of excellent work which we drew on during the show.

(For more information about them see their respective websites http://www.taylorhobynum.com/ and http://www.maryhalvorson.com/ as well as the record label Firehouse 12 Records at http://firehouse12.com/firehouse12_records.asp .)

Also touched on music from some of the other Time Flies participants bassoonist Sara Schoenbeck, violist Jessica Pavone, and percussionist Dylan Van Der Schyff.

Started the show with a stroll up and down West 42nd Street ending at Chris Davis's brand new release on the Cellar Live label.

Upcoming features on the A-Trane include interviews with Andy Milne, Benoit Delbecq (http://www.coastaljazz.ca/concert/an...benoit_delbecq) and Steve Dawson (https://www.capilanou.ca/news-events...nces/folk.html) as well as lots of musical features from Winterruption (see http://www.coastaljazz.ca/venue/performance_works_free and http://www.coastaljazz.ca/venue/perf...works_ticketed) and the Cultural Olympiad (http://www.vancouver2010.com/cultura...ls-and-events/).

And the usual heady mix of new releases and hot tunes of course ...
