Born:
June 21, 1973
Burnaby BC
Current home: Vancouver BC
Jared Burrows was born and raised in Vancouver where
he was fortunate to be inspired by a very diverse group
of fine local musicians including Fraser MacPherson,
Bill Clark, Hugh Fraser, Stan Taylor, Roger Baird, Bruce
Freedman, and Oliver Gannon. He later honed his skills
in performance with some of these people and has worked
continuously to develop the same kind of strong artistic
vision he heard first in their playing. Some of his
other musical influences include jazz musicians Jim
Hall and John Coltrane, and twentieth century composers
such as Weill, Stravinsky, and Ives. As a very active
bandleader and sideman, Jared has performed extensively
in concerts, festivals, radio, and television throughout
BC, Alberta, Washington, and Oregon. He has toured Western
Canada and the USA many times with his own trio and
quartet, as part of the Burrows/Kohler Duo, and with
the Knotty Ensemble. Burrows is also quickly becoming
known as a producer, recording and mastering engineer,
and as the head of the Third Rail Music Label. Currently,
Jared's performing and recording work is focused on
his jazz trio with Stan Taylor and Rob Kohler, the free
improv group Burrows/Reed/Macdonald, and an Indo-jazz
fusion project with two of Canada's finest Hindustani
classical musicians: tabla player, Hari Pal, and singer,
Shashi Lata Virk.
In addition to maintaining a busy performing career
playing jazz and improvised music, Jared has played
and composed music for film, dance, and theatre and
has been commissioned to compose for chamber groups
and electroacoustic resources. He holds a Masters degree
in Jazz Studies from the University of Oregon and a
Ph.D in Arts Education from Simon Fraser University.
His research focuses on music aesthetics and cognition
as they relate to the teaching of improvisation as well
as Sufi and Taoist philosophy applied to music. In what
little remains of his spare time, he builds guitars
and basses for some of the West Coast's finest performers.
