Early Stan
Just A Simple Toon
A Messenger For Blakey
Reflections On Soul

Recorded November 15, 2004 at "The House Of Love" (aka Carltone Studio) Produced by Stu Loseby, Miles Black, & Tony Chamberlist

"With Love & Respect" is a dedication to individuals who have influenced Stu personally and musically, with particular attention to his late wife (and jazz singer) Sheila Davis Loseby, his great friend, pianist Linton Garner, and his just lost Uncle Jack Tait. The compositions pay homage to these, and others, including Gene Ammons, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, and John Coltrane. The recording is warm and friendly, with an intentional bias towards the great Van Gelder Blue Note recordings of the 50's and early 60's.

One room with just two microphones captures three great players on four Genge originals and seven other tunes you’ve heard before. But not quite like this. Each track rolls off the block with the unprepossessing calm authority of one of those classic ‘50s Miles rhythm sections. In the pocket and in no great hurry. Pretty strange, maybe, for a pianist who took formal classes at State University of NY in Buffalo from modern American composer Morton Feldman, the guy who uses indeterminacy, and graphic notation like the hocket instead of regular dots, to create an abstract music form compatible with the world of painters like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. But far less surprising, perhaps, when you know he has published studies of both Wynton Kelly and Red Garland, and enjoyed an earlier career grooving it up on Hammond B3 with various Soul and R’n’B revues touring around western Canada way back in the days when there used to be a working circuit.

An established cross-border postmodernist composer, Professor Anthony Genge teaches C20th analysis, music history and performance, classical and jazz, at Saint Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia.

Blues Walk is Tony with his roots showing.

Tasty, transparent, relaxed and unshowy, the trio is a dream.

There are two wonderful solo piano pieces on this CD that are enough to make you wish for more, but “Sequences” is most definitely a group performance – like all my favourite recordings.

There’s a steady burn driving all the tracks here – even the ballads – the excitement of new music and a powerful commitment to making now happen. Great players with ears wide open, coming fresh to bright modern compositions, tunes that succeed brilliantly as platforms for improvisation, full of unexpected dark chords, pure melodic shapes, and contrary elements that develop independently.

Jarvis says that getting to work through Jim McNeely charts (of New York’s Vanguard Jazz Orchestra) had a big impact on the way he writes. And for me, the angularity and cool attack he’s built into these lovely small-group concepts is also reminiscent of Chick Corea .

His own approach to carving an improvisation through the pieces, if I were to make further comparisons, carries assured echoes of a lineage reflecting his respectful studies of Bill Evans, Richie Beirach, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, and the englishman John Taylor. But you can hear he has his own “thing” and a real individualistic approach to form and harmony. And, listening to the fun they have, it seems impossible to imagine a finer more supportive choice of accompanying musicians than the RoadHouse rhythm section of Coleman, Lister and Allen.

Everyone loved the session. And it shows.

A uniquely personal project that sets a great precedent for things to come.

Pay attention to Brent Jarvis.

The Sunship Ensemble, which formed in 1974, was a group in tune with its times. The incorporation of world music, drawn from many cultures, was evident in many celebrated jazz groups of the early 1970s. Their music reflected the Afro-Latin influences of the times, but Sunship Ensemble incorporated even more extended free form improvisations than most other fusion groups of the time. Although international in outlook, the group played a regionally-based music, influenced by the west coast, rainforest environment.

Some of the material for this CD was previously released on a 1975 CBC Transcription Recording, entitled Pacific Rim, produced by George Laverock, including several originals by Alan Sharpe and one piece entitled Great Wall of China, written by the Montreal-born pianist, Rick Kitaeff whose group in Japan at the time, Electric Ninja, shared the CBC album with the Sunship Ensemble. To reflect the Pacific Rim theme, the groups each did a composition by their counterpart across the Pacific.

This is truly a stellar group of players consisting of some of the finest musicians to ever come from Canada’s west coast.

RENEE ROSNES has lived in New York for many years and has become one of the busiest and most sought after players in the city. She has impeccable technique and a beauty and depth of musicality that place her in the highest echelon of today’s jazz pianists.

CAMPBELL RYGA has long been recognized as a leader on alto and soprano saxophone. He has a total understanding of harmony, great time and a gentle, pure sound that contributes greatly to the relaxed feeling of this music.

NEIL SWAINSON and RUDY PETSCHAUER are a perfect rhythm section, always playing what the music demands but always finding ways to contribute excitement and beauty to whatever is going on.

This is a band that sounds like a band. They are all seasoned players who know exactly how they want to play and, most importantly, they have the ability to make the music their own, regardless of the composer.

This is music that will always sound new.

The group recorded the original LP, Up ‘Til Now, in 1979. Since that performance, the quintet has been playing locally in Vancouver, including a sold out show at the Western Front in January, 2004.

"In June 2003 Tony and Miles asked me to lay down some tracks aimed at a wider audience. This is not for the hardcore jazz fans but is good playing and makes you feel good. Miles Black's solo (using a vibes setting) on the keyboard on East of The Sun is worth the cost of the entire CD. He is a wonderful musician and can play anything and everything called for. Tony Chamberlist's percussion work is great, making it all happen. As for myself I'm my usual laid back self but I mean everything I play. The vocals are for fun. It's good to have a laugh." - Stu Loseby

So little can be said about music without trampling it underfoot. In music we escape the real world. For as long as the music lasts we live in the sound, in a world that has no physical existence. Conversely, music also brings us more into the world by pointing out the mysteries in life and human experience. Why are we here? What are our relationships to each other? How do we handle ourselves? What is universal truth? I feel that what can be said about music merely helps to put it in a context. Here is some information about the human side of this recording, and about how Bow River Falls came about.

This was a true meeting of musicians. First brought together as a quartet by Ken Pickering at the Vancouver Jazz Festival in 1998, each of us subsequently met up in various situations, none documented on record. Louis invited me a few times to join his remarkable quintet in France. Peggy and Dylan, central to the vital creative music scene in Vancouver, both joined a project that I call Mountain Passages. Our first gig involved a hike to 9,000 feet in the Italian Dolomites. Needless to say, there was no recording equipment available.

When pianist Kenny Werner offered me the job as director of the Banff Workshop in 2002, Peggy and Dylan were the first two musicians I called to join the faculty. It was amazing to spend a few weeks with them and their sons Curtis and Dexter in the dry mountain air of Banff National Park. With the generous help of the French consulate, we were also able to bring Louis to participate in the workshop.

One of the most unexpected surprises at Banff is the existence, within all that wildness (bears, elk, etc.), of a state of the art recording studio. With the assistance of Banff Audio Department, we took an afternoon to put this recording together.
It was agreed that all of us would contribute compositions and conceptions, making the project truly a cooperative effort. Though we did rehearse, these readings of each other’s pieces retain a comfortable, spontaneous feeling. The instrumentation gave us an opportunity to add one of my favorite pieces by the great Steve Lacy, the catchy and infectious Blinks. Dylan’s addition of laptop computer to his drum kit on several pieces seems to blend naturally with the acoustic instruments, while creating an otherworldly atmosphere on the title track, on Window, and elsewhere.

Some of these pieces appear elsewhere in our discographies — for me, that heightens the uniqueness of this meeting. From disparate parts of the globe, united in a remote location, for a few hours, the language of music overcomes all boundaries in communication.

…evocative narratives deliciously married to the recording's moody soundscape. - Joseph Blake, The Victoria Times Colonist

… a gold mine of nuggets for collectors of original jazz and blues. - John Holmes, The Evening Telegram

…a versatile, expressive voice that strikes the heart of whatever song she is performing. - Robert Reid, The Kitchner-Waterloo Record

… the arranging and instrumentation create perfect moods and scenery behind Mary's words, drawing upon both European and South American influences…on top of honest lyric writing, beautifully sung melodies and flawless playing, the production is excellent….the lady can definitely sing the blues. - Kirk Newhook, The Measure

Moon Tiger is a collection of original tunes and jazz standards with a common theme of sensual languor and steamy tropical nights. From the cool, free floating beauty of Hugh Fraser and Miranda Sage's collaboration "Island Man" through to the torrid passion of Henry Mancini's "Slow Hot Wind", Moon Tiger provides a perfect vehicle for Miranda's expressive three-octave voice to deliver every emotion from yearning to lust, and every quality from sweet high purity to sultry come-hither worldliness. It is a voice made for capturing hearts.

"A savvy mix of tunes, tempos and ensembles sung with clear and efforless delivery by Miranda Sage." Neil Ritchie, CBC Radio

Recorded August 2003 at Riverside Studio in Vancouver.

Produced by Torben Oxbol

The State Of Bliss is Karin Plato's fifth independent release. Produced by Torben Oxbol, it features Karin's singing standards and originals with three different rhythm sections. Guest vocalist Denzal Sinclaire appears on two duets with Karin.

Word on the new release by the critics:

"Karin Plato is a marvellous Canadian jazz singer who has staked out unique terrain for herself. She combines sophisticated song writing with careful investigation into the jazz standard tradition". EJAZZNEWS.COM

"Singer Plato is hip and slick, never following obvious vocal routes, which is why the Vancouver-based warbler's latest disc of 13 songs (including six of her own) is a delight". THE TORONTO STAR

"It is always a pleasure to listen to a new release by jazz vocalist Karin Plato. In her latest collection, THE STATE OF BLISS, she is in topnotch form and her phrasing as always is perfectly matched with fine accompanying musicians and great song selections. Her voice is, as always, perfectly suited to jazz, and she sings up a grand entertainment in THE STATE OF BLISS". THE JAZZREVIEW

"Vancouver jazz vocalist Karin Plato has a warm, welcoming voice that invites you into a song. This happens time and again on The State of Bliss, Plato's latest recording". THE VANCOUVER SUN
