One of the distinguishing features of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, from its beginnings back in the mid-eighties, has been the innovative programming which presents visiting improvisors in collaborations with local players. Coastal Jazz & Blues, the festival’s producers, will be extending this concept further by itself collaborating with The Cellar Restaurant and Jazz Club in presenting a series of events at the club called Cross-Border Jazz, starting in October. The idea, again, is to bring together top musicians from Vancouver with top musicians from other communities around North America, and present them together in concert.

The first concert (October 3 and 4) brings, from Philadelphia, trumpeter John Swana and tenor saxophonist Bootsie Barnes to perfrom with Chris Gestrin on the B3 organ, Dave Sikula on guitar, and Morgan Childs, drums. At least another five concerts are currently in the planning stage.
