Kiwanis Jazz Festival 08

posted by Steve Bagnell

The Vancouver Kiwanis International Jazz Festival is back again this coming Monday and Tuesday (Feb 18-19) at Capilano College. Featuring over 40 different student ensembles, this year's festival is honoured to have an adjudication team consisting of Hugh Fraser, Brad Turner, Bob Rebagliati and Dr. Carlos Cody. Festival highlights include master classes for all instruments, and a Tuesday noontime performance the Cap College "A" band. On Monday noontime is a conduction workshop led by NOW Orchestra artistic director Coat Cooke.

The Monday evening feature performance is the Lower Mainland premier of Victoria-based Hypatia. Led by trumpeter Lorae Farell, this is an all-female jazz orchestra. These fine musicians explore the creative works of such jazz innovators as Kenny Wheeler, McCoy Tyner, John Coltrane, Dave Holland and Chucho Valdes, as well as some original works by Hugh Fraser. Special guest for the evening is the supremely talented Christine Duncan. The concert starts at 7:30 pm at the Birch Theatre at Capilano College [map]. Admission is free for festival participants and by donation for the general public.
