Hugh Fraser concert series starts this Sunday Nov 4

posted by Brian Nation

On the first Sundays of November, December and January, multiple JUNO Award winning composer, pianist, trombonist, and creator of legendary Vancouver-based bands VEJI and the Hugh Fraser Quintet, presents three different bands performing new compositions and arrangements at The Cellar.

From the press release:
Canadian Jazz Legend Hugh Fraser is presenting the "FULL CIRCLE" three concert project series at the Cellar to present three distinct landmark musical focuses that have changed Hugh's life and inspired countless others.

The trinity of concerts represents the SOURCE inspiration that defined the incredible passion and expression that Afro American artists associated or influenced by the civil rights movement in the 1960's brought to American Classical Music, commonly referred to as Jazz.

Hugh's extended family of musicians and artists listened and gained inspiration from the artists mentioned above, eventually transcribing and presenting the musical focus of these geniuses. This gave rise to the original compositions and formation of the Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation in 1980.

Now 27 years later and still growing through recordings, performances and tours, (VEJI performed with Chucho Valdez at the 2006 "Jazz Plaza" Festival in Havana, Cuba), Hugh wants to re visit the source of almost three decades of spreading peace and love through music and share it with not only his close musical family from the Hugh Fraser Quintet and VEJI, but include musicians that supported and encouraged Hugh in the late 70's in Vancouver, and embrace the new generation of West Coast creative contributors to make a joyous celebration for all present.
First concert in the series takes place Sunday November 2. The Source, featuring:
Cory Weeds on alto sax, Jon Bentley, tenor sax, Chris Davis, John Korsrud, Lorae Farrell on trumpets, Rod Murray on trombone, Steve Denroche on French horn, Brad Muirhead on bass trombone and tuba, Sean Cronin on bass, Morgan Childs on drums, William Taylor on vocals and Albert St. Albert on percussion.

New Musical Family
This will conclude the series with an combination of the long time musical family of Hugh's, and will introduce several new young lions from the broad world of contemporary music to create an entirely fresh approach to all new compositions by Hugh Fraser.
