Jewels & Binoculars tonight at Western Front
posted by Nou Dadoun
With Bob Dylan's reputation as the poet of a generation, it's often taken for granted that his tunes are just the scaffolding that presents his thoughts and phrases. But that overlooks the sumptious melodies at the heart of so many of his songs. Dylan has a reputation as a bit of a thieving magpie but his catalogue is rich in beautiful (and sometimes oddly familiar) melodies. The trio Jewels and Binoculars have taken on mining, revisiting and exploring the jewels in Dylan's catalogue, and the ongoing result should be of interest to Dylan's fans as well as lovers of strange and beautiful music. Michael Moore is probably the best known of the three having appeared in Vancouver not only with the ICP Orchestra but also many times in the erstwhile Clusone Trio. He's got the fattest clarinet sound since Barney Bigard and his alto tone owes a little to Paul Desmond but his gift for melodic invention is enough to make even a novice listener close their eyes and bask. Lindsay Horner and Michael Vatcher may not be as well-known in these parts (both have played many times but in more 'sideman' roles) but are skilled explorers and the result is repeatedly wonderful. They have 3 CDs out now and I'd encourage any skeptic to check out the samples that Cem has generously provided - link below. Unfortunately I was out of town (on my own bc tour) for the last two A-Trane shows otherwise I would definitely have done a feature and interview with the lads. Even if you've heard these guys in other contexts, try not to miss the show tonight at the Front, it's really something special. Sunday, July 15 - Western Front, 303 East 8th Avenue, Vancouver Concert will start promptly at 8 pm. Tickets are $15 at the door For reviews, sound clips, reservations, and lots more information go to zula.ca |
