Bobby McFerrin kicks off Festival Vancouver this Friday

posted by Brian Nation

The inimitable vocalist, composer, improvisor, and ten-time Grammy winner, Bobby McFerrin opens this year's Festival Vancouver on Friday, July 27, 8PM at The Centre for the Performing Arts. (Note that this is a venue change. The show was originally scheduled for The Orpheum.)

McFerrin is a natural wonder of the music world - one of the world's best-known vocal innovators and improvisers, a renowned classical conductor, the creator of "Don't Worry Be Happy", one of the most popular songs of the late 20th century, and a passionate spokesman for music education. His recordings have sold over 20 million copies, and his collaborations including those with Yo-Yo Ma, Chick Corea, the Vienna Philharmonic, and Herbie Hancock have established him as an ambassador of both the classical and jazz worlds.

The rest of the festival starts on August 5, with an eclectic program of 50 classical, jazz and world music concerts, with hundreds of resident and international artists. The jazz series features the Amanda Tosoff Quartet, Jeanette Lindström, Festival Jazz Orchestra, Zapato Negro, Christina and Carsten Dahl, the Eli Bennett Quartet, the Colin Story Quartet, and many others. For a full line-up and details visit the Festival Vancouver web site.
