CD Review: Harry Connick, Jr.

Chanson du Vieux Carré
Marsalis Music

I’m one of those, and I know I'm not alone, that questioned Harry Connick Jr’s jazz credibility from the start. I confess that once an artist fails to excite my interest I rarely give them another chance. It’s unfair, I know, but who's got time to check out everything? Today this showed up in my mailbox so I figured, what the hell, and threw it in the player. I'm glad I did. This is a cookin' big band album! Connick's on piano and the few vocals are by others, previously unknown to me, as is the entire band. Recorded a couple of years before Katrina, it honours the spirit of New Orleans. The music is filled with high spirits, soul, and vigour and though rooted in traditional New Orleans music is totally modern sounding.
